Since 2004, PYTCo has hosted a three-week summer youth theatre camp. The camp began relatively small with only about 20 kids involved with two adult directors. In the years since, the camp has grown to amass around 75 kids each year with nearly a dozen high school-aged counselors.
This year, camp directors Grace Knapton and Dusty Baker were slated to produce Seussical Jr for the 17th running of the camp, but the current novel coronavirus pandemic put a halt on the grand plans. Not only was this disappointing for Knapton and Baker, but also for the large group of eighth grade kids entering their final year of camp eligibility.
Recently, restrictions have begun to be lifted and Baker heard of a virtual musical being written by a company out of New York City named Beat by Beat Press. The show, titled, “Super Happy Awesome News”, is written to be rehearsed and performed completely remotely. However, Baker has designed a camp that will incorporate local experts in various fields of theatre that will host workshops for kids to learn new skills in an in-person setting while working to produce the virtual musical.
Dubbed “PYTCo’s Back-to-Basics Theatre Workshop and Virtual Show”, the camp will run Monday through Thursday beginning July 6 and end of July 23. All current CDC and NYS COVID-19 guidelines will be adhered to. The camp will run in 2-hours “shifts” to limit gathering sizes. To sign up your child for the camp fill out the Google Form linked below. Deadline to sign up is June 28. For questions reach out to Dusty Baker at contact@pytco.org
